L PRE-BLAST INSPECITONS
PURPOSE
The purpose of pre-blast inspections is to determine the condition.of the dwellings and/or structures in
the vicinity of a proposed quarry outside,Parkdale, Freemont County, Colorado and to document any
existing defects and/or other physical factors that could reasonably be affected by the quarry
operations. The main intent of the inspections is to provide independent documentation of the existing
physical conditions of the building interior and exterior with the locations and the dimensions of each
observable defect. Very often the homeowner is unaware of existing structural defects until an unusual
event, like a production blast at a quarry, draws the'v attention to them. Some homeowners then
assume the defects are new and caused by the event. The human body can sense ground vibrations
intensities as low as 0.03 inches per second. This degree of perceptibility, however, is not a reliable
indication of whether or not vibration damage is likely or possrble. For this reason, Agile Stone
Systems, Inc. followed Vibra-Tech Engineers, Inc. recommendation to complete the inspections prior
to the ground vibration and airblast test at the proposed quarry near Pazkdale, Freemont County,
Colorado.
PROCEDURE
• Most, if not all homes have cracks in plastered or sheetrocked walls and ceilings. Moreover, their
number and length usually increases with time. The factors and causes of these deformities include
settlement, fatigue, swelling and/or shrinking of the various budding materials. The United States
Bureau of Nfines has published a list of forty causes of cracks in masonry and plastered ceilings and
walls which are related to consttvction and design practices found in many residential structures. For
these reasons, when possible the homeowner or occupier was present during the inspection to see first
hand the noted pre-existing defomvties of their structure. The inspections detail the condition of the
structures at the time of the survey. The wndition of the inspected structures may change after the
date of the inspection due to many factors; such as weather, fire, moisture, actions by the owner, or the
passage of time.
Photography and written notes were utilized to document defects on the exteriors of the inspected
structures while a taped narrative with photography (if the owner allowed) was used in describing the
interior. All photographs and transcripts of the taped narrative aze included in the pre-inspection
surveys wmpleted from October 15 through October 21, 1997.
The following list comprises of the residences and structures inspected in vicinity of the proposed
-. quarty outside of Parkdale, Freemont County, Colorado.
STRUCTURE ADDRESS INSPECTION EST.
