This map unit consists of esposvres of rock outcrop <br />~-~~ on cliffs, breaks, ridges, and steep mountain tops, mountain peaks, and <br />mountain sides. The rock is predominately rhyolite, tuff and similar <br />'~ <br />volcanic rocks although some smn11 areas cvnrist of granite and schist. <br />1~ <br />Elevation ranges from 8,300 to 14,500 feet. Average annual precipitation <br />ranges fsvm 18 to 45 inches. Average annual air temperature ranges from ?6 <br />to 38 degrees F., and the frost-free season ranges from 20 to 75 days. <br />Included in this unit are small areas of shallow and very shallow soils <br />over bedrock, and about 30 percent Rubble land. <br />This map unit is used as wildlife habitat and for recreation, scenic <br />attraction, watershed, and for wnstruction materials. <br />Native vegetation is sparse and occurs on the small areas of inclusions <br />and in cracks and fissures in bedrock. It varies largely with elevation and <br />~ consists mostly of alpine grasses and forbs above timberline, and Engelmann <br />spruce, Ibuglas fir, shrubs and grasses at lower elevations. <br />Ootcsops of rorJ~, cliffs, and steep slopes are severe limitations for <br />road construction and other engineering uses of this unit. some of the more <br />accessible areas of this unit are used as a source of construction materials <br />for road building. It has severe limitations for most recreational uses but <br />offers many opportunSties for mountain climbing and hi7cing at high <br />elevations. <br />wildlife such es marmots, eagles, hawks, pike, sQuirrels, and bear use <br />this unit. It provides concealment and nesting areas for many species. <br />Thay obtain food from inclusions and nearby soils. <br />~~~ <br />
