Tne Ciruela Canyon alluvium is underlain by the Baton rormation •
bedrock. This formation is a complex sequence of interoeduea sanastones,
siltstones, mudstones and carbonaceous shales xiti[ occasional coal seams.
As a result of low porosity, premeaoility and a large degree of
heterogenity, ~~ie unit has peen considered an aquacluaa. Occasional coal
seams are oelieved to be the predominant aquifers in :ne Raton rormation.
r:stimates of these hydrologic parameters of the Baton Formation nave been
well documented in previous application suomittals by CFacI Steel
Corporation. As noted aoove, the xaton Formation c..~crops souti[ and west
from themine reject pile and near Sediment Pond UU4. These exposures mark
respective poi~its of recharge and discharge of the Ciruela Canyon alluvium.
Another point of rech, roe is the Ciruela Canyon diversion, as this diversion
is excavated in uncunsoiidated colluvium at an ~.evation topographically
nigher than tae Ciruela Canyon alluvium.
The groundxater table in the Ciruela Canyon alluvium is shown in the
longitudinal profile of Section F-F'. This xater table is based on uata
from CFdcI studies, recently completed backhoe pits and xater level data .
fromthe allvuial monitoring well. CFBI Pits 1 to ~ and Pit A had water
levels consistent xith the oedrock alluvial material contact. Alluvial well
water levels taken during 1944 indicate the groundwater table xill remain at
a level 5 to 1U feet below the base of the present g^ound surface oecause
Ciruela Canyon alluvium saturation is topographically and geologically
limited oy the bedrock exposure (discharge point) near Sediment Ponu UU4.
Titus, the water table in Ciruela Canyon alluvium should not contact the
processing pile.
YHUCd55Idd WASTF; PI Lt; LAYUUT ll~SIGN AND DRAiNAGt; PLAN
waste pile plan viexs and crass sections are shown on Figure 1. 'Tne
drainage area surrounding this pile is ri.tij acres. Tne south ditch will
contain 4.yy acres of disturoed runoff. Tne north ditch will contain 4.U4
acres of disturbed runoff. All draiange will report to Sediment Pond UU4A.
Tne 10 year 24 hour peaK flow es been calculated at 2U.1 cis for these
ditches. .
-4-
