2-fl
e *Proctor Density ASTM D698-70 Method A
**Compacted to natural dry density and soaked
96 hours prior to penetration with 10 lb.
surcharge (ASTM D1883)
The basic design criteria applied to road construction is as
follows:
° 25-ton haul trucks
° Vehicle width - eight feet
° Maximum weight = 90,000 lbs.
° Maximum wheel load = 7,000 lbs.
Construction criteria follows:
° One-half inch (~") slope per foot on finished
surface road widths
straights = 2.0 x width = 16 feet
• curves = 2.5 x width = 20 feet
° Berm height*** - radius of largest tire
° Subbase = 2.0 feet beyond finished road width
on both sides
° Surface top materials = six inch (6") minimum
depth
***When required by MSHA regulation
Construction of the roads shall require different cutslopes,
depending on the type of material encountered and the natural
slope of the topography. Slopes cut in rock shall be no
steeper than 1H:4V and cutslopes in unconsolidated material
will be no steeper than 2H:1V. If insufficient area is en-
countered for 2H:1V slopes, cutslopes of 1.SH:1V shall be
allowed in unconsolidated material if stability analysis shows
a factor of safety of 1.5:1 or improved local stability over
• pre-mining can be attained. All cutslopes shall have a maximum
height of sixty feet at which point a fifteen foot bench shall
