z
Table 4 shows four estimators (E).for the sampled area: 1. enumerated
population (all marked animals caught by live traps plus those unmarked caught
sequentially 6y the kill traps); 2. calculated number at end of 6th day of
live trapping by employing the modified Peterson Index method; 3. calculated
number at end of 6th day of live trapping by employing program CAPTURE; and
4. calculated number employing the modified Peterson Index to numbers of
marked and unmarked caught by snap traps in the sequential kill-trap operation.
Numbers shown are not numbers per unit area, but only indices. In order to
express numbers per unit area, the effective trapping area for each species
in relation to the size of the grid or transect line would have to be defined
The effective trapping area would, of course, be larger than the physical
dimensions of the grid or transect line. Measures of distances that the
animals were moving at time of sampling would have to be used to describe
a width of boundary necessary to enclose the effective trapping area.
Because I do not know the format of the information on animal numbers that
you collected more recently, I'm not sure that these data sets are in the
best possible form to meet your immediate needs.
Please call if I can be of more help.
rSilncerely yours, ~ ,, - Q
~J tA.C Q.SZ~ ~ `~
Vincent H.
