The enclosed aerial photo
shows the approximate boundaries of the 40-acre plot in Streeter Canyon
that was sampled for numbers of breeding birds. The pencilled line on the
photo shows the approximate location of the transect line used in sampling
for numbers of small mammals. Corners of the 40-acre plot and ends of the
small mammal transect line, and associated 5-acre grid, were marked with steel
fence posts. Perhaps the post may still be in place. _
Table 1 shows the number of birds, by species, that were spot mapped in
the various sampling periods. Table 2 shows the best approximation of
number of breeding birds for the areas sampled, including Streeter Canyon,
resulting from the spot mapping records for the seven sampling periods.
The arrangement used to sample numbers of small mammals is shown on the
enclosed form. Live traps were used on the 5-acre grid in a mark-recapture
effort for 6 days. After the 6th day, the live traps were removed and a
transect line of snap traps (20 stations, three traps per station, operated
for three days and nights) was used to sample the area. Stations were 50
feet apart and one rat trap and two museum special snap traps were used at
each station.
Results of the small mammal sampling are shown in Tables 3 and 4. Table 3
shows the numbers of marked animals assumedly alive at termination of the
6-day live trapping period.
r~+l ~EROV
Save Energy and You Serve America!
w ~=.
;_~.::
~,;,~;.
.~._
tiC:•~~
;..
.~_

~: - .
-°;'._
_._ .
~.w t
t~
~T
~.: .
p' ..
~~
~F
.,y4+"
L~^•.f
~"
,....
. ,-.... .
