Wolf Creek Underburden. Well WWCU24 was drilled in August 2001. The two samples
collected so far display a Na-HC03S0< type water with TDS values of 1180 and 2380 mg/I.
Ground Water Quality Suitability. SCC has compiled lists of standards for irrigation and
livestock. These lists are composed mostly of Colorado Department of Public Health and
Environment (CDPHE) standards, although other agency standards have been used if they are
more stringent or if the CDPHE has no standard for a particular parameter. See SCC's Yoast
Mine Permit Application, Tables 7-21 and 7-23, for a more detailed explanation of these
standards.
Table 7-47 provides a comparison of ground water quality in the II-W South area to irrigation
standards. Standards that were exceeded were boron at one well, cadmium at four wells,
chlorides at one well, pH values at seven wells, fluorides at four wells, iron at six wells,
manganese at five wells, molybdenum at ten wells (most due to high detection limitsl, selenium
at one well, TDS at eleven wells, sulfates at eight wells, and zinc at two wells (due to the
galvanized pipe used in these two flowing wellsl.
Table 7-48 provides a comparison of ground water quality in the II-W South area to livestock
standards. Standards that were exceeded were chromium at three wells, pH values at seven
wells, and fluorides at two wells. Mercury and lead detection limits were higher than the
standards for two samples.
Surface Water Quality and Flow
Introduction. Table 15-1 (Tab 15, Hydrologic Monitoring Planl provides a summary of all
surface water monitoring sites at Seneca II-W. Appendix 7-10 provides surface water quality
and flow data. Data provided for each site includes a TDS vs. time plot with a LOWESS
regression line (see previous Ground Water Quality sectionl, milliequivalent tables, hydrographs
of flow data, statistical summaries of water quality data, individual water quality reports, and
finally remark reports. An update of data for Permit Revision 3 (Sage/Wolf Creek coal) in the II-
W South area may be found at the end of Appendix 7-10.
Site SW-S2W-SG9 (WSH9). This site exists on Hubberson Gulch upstream of Pond 017. It
was first sampled in August, 1997. Samples at this site display a CaMg-HCOaSOa type water
with an average TDS values of 354 mg/I (range 240-4001.
149 Revised 01/02
