2.C4.~ General Descriptien of Hydrology and Geology
•
This application provides a description of neology and hydrology on all
lands within the permit area, the adjacent area, and the general area,
as defined in Section 1.04 of the Colorado Regulatory Program.
The Mt. Harris Coal Company is located in Routt County along the Yampa
River. The general area is characterized by the Yampa River and side
perennial, intermittent, and ephemeral drainage which separate the
adjacent lands located both north and south of the Yampa River.
In the vicinity of the permit area, the structure of the basin has been
modified by many folds. The largest of these is the Tow Creek
Anticline, which is located several miles east of the loadout and is an
oil producing area. Other major folds in the area are the Wolf Creek
Dame, the Chimney Creek Dome, the Williams Park P,nticline, and
Twentymile Park. The areal structure has also been modified by numerous
• faults, which are shown on Map 2, Regional Geology/Hydrology.
Several Upper Cretaceous geologic formations crop out in the area. They
are, in ascending order, the Mancos Shale, the Iles Formation, the
Williams Fork Formation, and the Lewis Shale.
The Iles and Williams Fork Formations comprise the Mesaverde Group and
contain the lower Mesaverde coals and the middle and upper Mesaverde
coals, respectively.
None of the formations mentioned abcve are known to be aquifers in the
vicinity of the mine. Quaternary alluvial deposits along the Yampa
River are the main sources of ground water in the area. In addition,
ephemeral streams have been dammed to provide water for livestock in
several localities in the vicinity of the mine.
The Yampa River provides drainage for Northwest Colorado and is a
• tributary of the Green River which eventually flows into the Colorado
River. Snowmelt is the principal source of water for the Yampa River
2.04.5-1
