• I. Introduction
Western Slope Carbon Corporation's (WSCC) Hawke Nest East mine, located in
Gunnison County, Colorado, employed 3t9 people in 1980. The proposed re-
opening of the West mine will necessitate hiring an additional 31 people by
1983. The peak employment of 350 should be reeched in 1983 and will remain at
that level through 1990.
In November, 1980, Hawke Nest East installed a longwall to supplement
continuous miner technology. The change in mining technology is the principal
reason employment need not exceed 350, ae longwall is capital, rather than
labor-intensive, thus allowing portions of the East Mine workforce to transfer
to the re-opened Weat mine.
Historically, coal production levels at the East Mine have been leas than .5
million tons per year. However, the combined decisions to install a longwall
and to re-open the West mine will result in production reaching 1.5 million
• tons per year in 1985. The historical production figures are in Appen dix B of
this report.
Employment at Hawk's Nest East steadily increased since Western Slope'a
acquisition of the mine in late 1975. Both historical and future quarterly
employment levels are detailed in Table i-1. The average monthly employment
was computed by summing the monthly employment and dividing by 12.
•
1
------_.._._...,- ~.- ----- .. _._ -.. ~,.~_.._r..~_,r..~... ___ ___ ,_.,..
