No.: 05-00293 <br />COMPANY OFFICIALS: Al Amundson and Dave Hettinger <br />STATE OFFICIAL: Dave Aolms <br />OSM OFFICIALS: Larry Damrau and Murray Smith <br />GEiJERAL COAQdENTS <br />The Western Slope Carbon, Inc., Hawks Nest Mine is located approximately <br />2 miles east of Somerset, Colorado on Highway 133. Active mining is pre- <br />sently taking place only at the east mine portal. The operation consists <br />of four general areas: the loadout and storage area south on Highway 133 <br />within Section 10, T13S, R90W; the nest mine portal area north of Highway 133 <br />with Section 10, T13S, R90W; the east mine portal area located north and <br />south of .Highvay 133 Section 11, T13S, R90W; and the Crystal Meadows waste <br />dump located vest of highway 135 within the confluence of the North Fork <br />Gunnison River and Coal Creek Section 10, T13S, RB9W. All locations are <br />within Gunnison County, Colorado. <br />The Crystal Meadovs site consists of approximately 15 (fifteen) acres. <br />Disposal operations have been terminated and reclamation operations have <br />been initiated. Reclamation operations which remain to be completed include <br />construction of riprap along the south bank of the area (approximately 60 <br />feet), topsoil replacement operations and revegetation. <br /> <br />COMPLIANCE WITH INTERIM REGULATIONS <br />717.11 General Obligations <br />Copies of current permits, licenses, approved plans and other author- <br />izations to operate were observed at the mine site. Portions of the <br />approved mine plan for the Federal Coal Lease associated with the <br />Hawks Nest East Mine were not available at the mine site for inspection. <br />717.12 Signs and Markers <br />Mine and permit identification signs were observed at points of access <br />to the permit areas from State Highvay 133. The State Mining and <br />• Reclamation Permit Number vas absent from the signs, although the <br />numbers of the three Federal leases which the company is presently <br />operating under vas displayed. The company added the state permit <br />number to the present signs. <br />
