Non-Technical Descriptions ~~ "~ ___________~_._.________

Soil Survey Area: 121 WASHINGTON COUNTY, COLORADO
Map unit: 20 Eckley-Orsa gravelly sandy foams, 5 to 15 percent slopes
Description Category: SOI
This map unit is on rolling, dissected high alluvial lertaces. This unit consists of 55
percent Eckley and 25 percent Orsa soils. The components are in7icebly mixed not
allowing practical separation in the field. The Eckley soil is a deep, well drat
ned soil. It formed in sandy alluvium from sandstone sources. The suAace is a gravelly
sandy loam. The upper portion of the subsoil is a gravelly sandy clay bam, the Power
portion of the subsoil is a gravelly sandy loam. The substratum to a depth of 60 i
nches or more is a gravelly sand. This soil has a moderate permeability. The available
water holding capacity is low. Roots penetrate to a depth of 60 inches or more. Runoff is
medium to rapid and the erosion hazard due to wind is moderate. The Orsa soil
is a deep, somewhat excessively drained soil. It formed in sandy alluvium from
sandstone materials. The surface is a gravelly sandy foam. The upper portlon of the
underlying material is a gravelly coarse sandy bam, the lower portion of the underlying
mate
dal to a depth of 60 inches or more is a gravelly sand. This soil has a rapid permeability.
The available water holding capacity is low. Roots penetrate to a depth of 60 inches or
more. Runoff is slow and the erosion hazard due to wind is moderate.
Map unit: 3 Ascalon fine sandy loam, 0 to 3 percent slopes
Desniption Category: SOI
The Ascabn soil rs a deep, well drained soil. It is fortnetl in wind reworked alluvium
from mixetl sources. The surface layer is a fine sandy loam. The subsoil is a sandy
clay loam. The substratum to a depth of 60 inches or more is fine sandy loam. The A
scalon soils have moderately slow permeability. The available water holding capacity is
high. Effective rooting depth is 60 inches or more. Runoff is slow and the erosion
hazard due to wind is severe.
Map unit: SS Platner loam
Description Category: SOI
The Platner soil is a deep, well drained soil. It is formed in alluvium from reworked
Ices and sandstone matedal. The surface layer is a loam. The upper portion of the
subsoil is a silty clay overlying a silty clay loam. The substratum is a loam b san
dy loam. The Platner soils have slow permeability. The available water holding
capacity is high. Effective rooting depth is 60 inches or more. Runoff is slow and the
erosion hazard due to wind is moderate.

Tuesday, May 06, 2003 Poge l oj1
aR~s- 5
