5. ROAD ACCESS
Primary access to the property is US Highway 50 which provides excellent access to Interstate 70
interchange at Fruita. The haul route from the pit intersects US Highway 50 at an existing
channelized intersection at the point that the N-S section line between Sections 11 and 12 meets the
Highway. This is the graveled portion of 15 Road proceeding south to the permit area. Map C-1
indicates the location of the haul route from Highway 50 to the permit area. This route follows ex-
isting roads established as part of the previous refinery activities. Improvements are limited to
maintenance of the gravel surfaces. Given the maximum production of the site coupled with avail-
able trucks, it is estimated that a peak of 15 trips per hour will utilize [he haul route at maximum
production. Two types of trucks will be used; tandem axle trucks with a capacity of 14 tons and 24
ton capacity belly dump trucks. It is expected that 90% of the trucks moving the products off site
will be of the belly dump type. In order to control dust, water will be used on an as needed basis.
Magnesium chloride may also be considered if needed.
6. MINE FACILITIES
The site will consist of a portable crushing and screening plant, portable stacker conveyors, portable
asphalt plant, portable truck scale, portable dewatering equipment, portable scale house trailer and
gen-set portable light fixtures in case some urgent work is needed at night. No night operations are
scheduled for the site. All structures on site are shown on Map C-2. There will be no fuel storage
tanks or fuel farm on the site other than the tanks shown below
- 10,000 gallon diesel tank that is part of the crushing/screening plant.
- 6,000 gallon diesel tank which is part of [he asphalt plant.
- 500 gallon diesel tank at the dewatering pump
All of the tanks above will be bermed to contain 110% of the tank capacity and lined with an imper-
meable liner for spill protection. To further protect hydrologic balance, tank inspections and ground
inspections will occur daily on site. If any fuel or asphaltic material is encountered, the gravel mate-
Gilsonite Pit 10/02 11
