COLORADO WESTMORELAND INC.
,~
P. O. Box E, Paonia, Colorado B142B ~ 303-527-4'135
July 7, 1981
Al Spika
Soil Conservation Service
690 Industrial Blvd.
Delta, Colorado 81416
RE: Request for Services
Dear A1;
(1) Colorado Westmoreland, Inc. desires to construct several
new surface facilities, namely a truck scale, extension to
the present railroad spur and a 500,000 galTbn water storage
tank. Per the Colorado Regulations for Coal Mining, CWI needs
• a letter of SCS stating whether any or all of the aforementioned
facilities will be constructed on prime farmland as they are
presently located. See attached maps.
(2) CWI currently has a well field in Stevens Gulch located
on a potential Alluvial Valley Floor (AVF). Stevens Gulch
is an ephemeral stream which flows in April, May and sometimes
June depending on precipitation.
One of the criteria for an AVF is whether an area has been
historically flood irrigated or the potential exists.
In the Steamboat Springs area some ephemeral streams are ponded
during months of flow and then used to irrigate throughout the
summer.
I would like a letter from you on whether this is a regional
practice in this area or the possibilities due to existing
water laws.
Sincerely, ~-~.~
/ patricia Farnswo~ rt~~
~ ~ Mining Engineer
PMF/sv
uaso~aar ~_
E$iMpgE~__tip
JOL IGMPLM
