Step=_ to ke-e5tabli5h An Adapted Vegetative Cdver:
If mining will be done over a prolonged period of time. procedures for
re-vegetation should start immediately after each segment of the are?. i=_
mined out. This to prevent natural re-invasion by undesirable plants
such as three-awn and 5leepvara=_s.
Anv reuseable topsoil material at the mining site will be saved and
stockpiled separately away from the mining location.
1. Site preparation - After removal of the gvosum the mined "floor" of
the pit should be chiseled or scarified 3-4" deep to break up an.•
slid: hard pan condition and allow a better bonding of added topsoil
with the substrate. Side slopes into the pit should be tapered to
4:1 or less to reduce erosion and allow for drilling.
2. Apply topsail - The fine gvosum screenings will be stockpiled at the
site. Screenings will later be missed with an equal amount of good
soil material hauled in from off site. Since the gypsum screening=_
will be quite sterile, it i5 important that good quality soil be
added to provide a reasonably good seeding medium. This sail should
free of noxious weed Seed.
Manure - Uairv manure, at least B tons per acre, will also be hauled
in and well mixed with the soil before seeding. The manure should be
aged or well rotted. No commercial fertiliser will oe needed if an
adequate amount of manure is added. The seedbed mi;:ture of
screenings. added soil and manure should be at least S-Sn" in depth
to assure a reasonable success for the re-seeding.
before =_eedinq the site should be double disced to hill sprouting
weeds, and harrowed or dragged to provide a firm seedbed.
~. Seeding - A drill capable of handling the Seed should be used. The
drill should be equipped with a seedbox agitator and press wheels or
drag chains to cover the seed. Shallow planting, not over 1/2" deep
usually results in the best success. If any areas are so rough as to
require broadcast seeding, double the normal amount of seed should be
used.
kecommended Seeding Mixture - See attached Cu-ECS-`
~FCEIV~D
AUG 2 91997
ow~s~pn u. wunerals & Geology
