~~
UNITED STATES DEPARTh1ENT OF AGRICULTURE
SOIL CONSEP.VATIO`J SERVICE
San ;Liguel County gravel pits - Page 2
February 15, 1979
Again this is more of a quarry-tyre operation, and I feel little can be
done rr_th the side slopes. I ha~re not noticed any soil material that
wa.; set aside fcr surfacing.
Because of the sno*.a cover, I was unable tc malte any estimate of the
present vegetation on anal of the sites except Troy Rese~, however
I am including a copy of the potential native vegetation for each of the sites.
In n0' opinion the Norwood airport and Egnar pits would be similar to the
vegetation found under a Pinyon-Juniper Woodland aspect. The Basin pit
would reflect tre lower extremes of the Loamy Fcot_hill range site.
- Potential forage nroductior. could be somewhat loner than a typical
Loamy Foothills site. The Troy Rose pit would be similar vegetatively
to a Semi-Desert Loam range site in very low condition due to past
over-use. The Applebange pit could be classed as a Rivertottom
vegetative site.
In revegetatior., greater success can be expected if the disturbed
areas are shaped and graded, and covered with soil material to at least
a depth of 6 to 8 inches. We would reco.-emend late fall seeding on aL
sites to take advantage of available spring moisture and less reed
conmetition. I recommEnd the following broadcast seeding rates for
mixtures: Egnar, Basin and :dor-.rocd airp~.rt sites -- Vinall Russian
wildrye - 6 pounds per acre; Nordan crested wheatgrass - 6 pounds per
acre; Amar inte_:~.ediate wheatgrass - lli pounds per acre. Apolebaugh site --
Sodar streamoank wheatgrass - 8 oounds per acre; :•?anchar smooth brome -
10 pounds per acra; Latar orchardgrass - 11 pounds per acre. Troy Rese site
Sand dropseed - >3 ncurds per acre; Palcma Indian ricegrass - 12 pounds per
acre.
I am also including a copy of a general soils map of the Dolores River
Basin for ycu_r use. I hope `phis iafox^nation will be cf help to you,
Sincerely,
G~:,~~
Chris Gray
District Conservationist
Soil Conservation Service
tdorwood, Colorado
