• Splitro Series
The Splitro series consists of shallow, well-drained soils that
formed in sandstone residuum. Splitro soils are on mountain side-
slopes and ridgecrests and have slopes of 3 of 65 percent. The
average annual precipitation is 18 to 25 inches, the average annual
air temperature is 37 to 40 degrees F., and the frost-free season
is 40 to 65 days. Elevations are 7000 to 8400 feet.
Splitro soils are not similar to any other soils in the mapping
area. They are mapped near the Coutis and Winevada soils. Coutis
soils are deep and have less than 18 percent clay. Winevada soils
have hard sandstone at 20 to 40 inches.
A typical pedon of Splitro sandy loam, 3 to 25 percent slopes, is
about 5 miles east and 9 miles south of Hayden, 2300 feet east and
2100 feet north of the southwest corner of section 23, T. 5 N., R. 89 W.
All - 0 to 12 inches; very dark grayish brown (lOYR 3/2) sandy loam,
• very dark brown (lOYR 2/2) moist; weak coarse subangular blocky parting
to weak fine granular structure; soft, very friable, non-sticky,
non-plastic; neutral; clear smooth boundary.
A12 - 12 to 18 inches; dark grayish brown (lOYR 4/2) sandy loam, very
dark grayish brown (lOYR 3/2) moist; weak coarse subangular blocky
parting to weak moderate subangular blocky structure; soft, very
friable, non-sticky, non-plastic; neutral; abrupt smooth boundary.
R - 18 inches plus; fractured hard sandstone.
Depth to bedrock ranges from 8 to 20 inches. Content of channers and
flags in the lower part of the A horizon ranges from 0 to 20 percent
by. volume.
The A horizon has a hue of 7.SYR or lOYR, value of 3 or 4 dry,
2 to 3 moist, and chroma of 1 through 3.

-81-
