f <br />• AN INTRODUCTION TO THE PROJECT <br />AND STUDY AREA <br />l~ <br />Project Background <br />In April of 1977 Thorne Ecological Institute of boulder commissioned <br />Centuries Research, Inc. of Montrose to complete a cultural resource survey <br />of the impact area of the Orchard Valley Mine, a coal operation, which is <br />f currently being developed by Colorado Westmoreland, Inc. near Paonia in <br />Delta County, Colorado (Fig. 1). The immediate impact area of the coal <br />I' <br />i mining project involves lands controlled by the mining company, [he Bureau <br />of Land Management, and various private individuals. The cultural resource <br />survey was initiated with two primary goals in mind. The first was to <br />j . identify and evaluate cultural resources o-rithin [he immediate impact area <br />i <br />i <br />in order to satisfy [he Bureau of Land Management's requirements for the <br />, <br />granting of permits for land altering activities. The second goal was to <br />~. <br />inventory cultural resources located o-rithin a one mile radius of the im- <br />~, mediate impact areas.
