vi
•
ABSTRACT
1 In April and May of 1977 a cultural resource survey was undertaken
within the impact area of Colorado Westmoreland, Inc.'s Orchard Valley

coal mine development near Paonia in Delta County, Colorado. The survey
was completed by Centuries Research, Inc. of Montrose, Colorado, on be-
' half of Thorne [colo~ical Institute of Boulder, Colorado. The survey tract
totalled several thousand acres located in three major parcels which to-
gether constituted a transect extending into the mountains from the North
fork Valley of the Gunnison River. The thirteen sites located within [his
transect represenr.ed early 20th century coal mine workings, 19th century
ranch/homesteads, ho~,r~steads and cow camps of the 1920's, prehistoric
• Indian sites, and other miscellaneous occupations. The sites have been
individually discussed from the perspective of [heir associations with
basic patterns in [he historical/cultural development of the North Fork
area. llo sites have been recommended for nomination to the Flational Register
of Historic Places, and only three are believed to be potentially eligible
for [he Register. The Orchard Valley Mine development wil! seemingly have
no adverse impact on significant archaeological, historical, or other
cultural resources.
•
