Draft: April S, 1999 Page D-1
' APPENDIX D
STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE FOR EQUIPMENT DECONTAMINATION
1
' D.1 INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this document is to define the standazd operating procedure (SOP) for
t equipment decontamination at the American Soda, Yankee Gulch Sodium Project. This document
describes the materials and procedures for decontaminating the equipment used in groundwater and
' surface water sampling. This SOP serves as a supplement to the Groundwater and Surface Water
Monitoring Plan.
The overall objective of the sampling program is to obtain samples which accurately depict
the chemical, physical, and/or biological conditions of groundwater and surface water at the site.
' Extraneous materials can be introduced into the sample medium during the sampling program (e.g.,
by bailing or pumping of groundwater with equipment previously used at another sampling site).
' Trace quantities of these materials can thus be captured in a sample and lead to false positive
analytical results and, ultimately, to an incorrect assessment of conditions associated with the site.
Decontamination ofnon-dedicated sampling equipment (e.g., bailers, pumps, and other equipment)
' is therefore required to prevent sampling cross-contamination.
' D.2 EQUIPMENT
' The following is a list of equipment that may be needed to perform decontamination:
~ Plastic brushes
' ~ Wash tubs or 5-gal buckets
Plastic scrapers
t ~ Sponges or paper towels
Laboratory-grade, nonphosphate detergent (low sudsing) (e.g. Alconox, Liquinix)
' ~ Potable water
' ~ Distilled or deionized water, including laboratory-grade distilled or deionized water
~ Spray bottles or gazden-type water sprayers
' ~ Clean plastic sheeting and/or trash bags
' Agapito Associates, Inc.
