• Mr. Gregg Squire -5- January 7, 1985
Sz = Weighted variance of the mean for the revegetated
n area and reference area standards
The t-test equation calculates an estimated t value (te). The estimated
value is compared to a t table value (two tailed) to evaluate vegetation
success. If to is less than or equal to the t table value, revegetation
success is confirmed.
As discussed in the response to permit Stipuation 'i6, the post-mining
woody plant density level will be 1000 stems per acre over at least 1/3 of the
acres. Since seeding will be the primary means for establishing shrubs, and
because all areas will be seeded with the same seed mix, it is expected that
an overall average of at least 333 woody stems per acre will be achieved.
Therefore, the woody density standard for revegetation success will be 333
stems per acre with 80 percent statistical confidence. If woody density on
the reclaimed area is equal to or greater than 333 stems per acre,
revegetation success for woody density will have been met. If woody density
on the reclaimed area is less than 333 stems per acre, a hypothesis will be
• developed and testing using the t test comparison as described above.
Species diversity will be evaluated during studies for bond release using
both qualitative and quantitative criteria. The vegetation on the reclaimed
area will be a combination of seeded and volunteer species and both will be
addressed in the species diversity evaluation. Both the species richness and
equitability component of species diversity will be addressed during the
evaluation. Seasonal variety of vegetation will also be discussed.
Quantitative evaluations of speceis composition and diversity will be based on
data gathered during the cover and productivity sampling.
A vegetation species list will be generated for the reclaimed area for
qualitative comparison with the premining and reference area species list. A
discussion and qualitative comparison of the dominant herbaceous species (? 5
percent relative cover, frequency, or production) on the undisturbed areas and
reclaimed site will focus on the values of the major species relative to the
respective pre- and post-mining land uses.
The Motyka Index of similarity will be used to provide a quantitative
evaluation of similarity of vegetative cover of the various life forms in the
plant communities on the pre-mine and reclaimed areas. The Motyka Index of
similarity (ISmo) formula is:
•
