State Reg.
• 4.06.4 III. TOPSOIL REPLACEMENT
Since the soil survey was completed in the summer of 1979, nine stockpile
locations were eliminated by redistributing topsoil on regraded spoil areas
and four additional stockpiles, numbers 24 through 27, have been established
(see Table 9-I-2 and Exhibit 9-2, Topsoil Salvage Isopach and Stockpile
Locations). Currently (as of November 1980) there are approximately 260.0
acre-feet of topsoil contained in 18 stockpiles. Table 9-I-2 lists individual
topsoil volumes for each storage pile.
Soil material from Stockpile Nos. I through 23 is considered to be highly
suitable for a plant growth medium (see Soil Survey Report and Analyses,
Tab 9, Table 4). To reconfirm soil quality, a complete soil analysis will be
performed on samples to be collected from Stockpile Nos. 24 through 27
during the spring of 1981.
• Approximately 1775.8 acre-feet of suitable topsoil is expected to be
salvaged from the anticipated October 1980 through 2002 disturbance area
(Table 9-I-I). The total October 1980 through 2002 disturbance area is
expected to be 986.2 acres (Table 9-I-I). The disturbance area during
July I, 1976 until October 1980 was 533.8 acres. Therefore, the total
disturbance area that will require topsoil replacement is 1520.0 acres. By
dividing the number of acre-feet available topsoil (2035.8 -Table 9-I-I plus
9-I-2) by the number of acres to be or that are disturbed (1520.0 -
Table 9-I-2), it is estimated that approximately 1.4 feet (15 - 18 inches) of
highly suitable topsoil will be replaced.
This topsoil replacement depth will be beneficial to establishing a good
seedbed and rooting medium. The anticipated loamy texture will have '
favorable infiltration and water holding characteristics. Also, the spoil
medium immediately below the topsoil will have desirable chemical and
physical characteristics for plant growth including a loamy texture, low
sodium adsorption ratio and electrical conductivity, medium saturation
• percentage for favorable water holding characteristics, and no minor
9-7
