Benson Brothers Red Shale Pit
DMG 112 Application
Exhibit E- Reclamation Plan
All grading on site will be performed at times when erosion due to weather conditions
will be minimized. Areas outside the affected lands will be protected from slides or
other damage due to the fact that most mining azeas slope to the north, keeping material
within the affected lands. Mining and grading near the top of the ridge will be
accomplished using track-hoes to pull material down to the north thereby preventing
any material from being pushed toward the south side of the ridge. Silt fences will be
used to prevent incidental release of material to the south slope.
Backfilling and grading will be performed as soon as practical after mining so that no
more than 3 acres of un-reclaimed disturbance is present at any one time, with the
exception of final revegetation and the process azea.
There will be no acid-forming or toxic materials mined on this site. Any refuse will be
properly disposed of.
There will be no drill or auger holes or shafts on this site.
Slope combinations proposed for this site are similar and compatible with surrounding
conditions and land use. There will be no ponds left on site as part of the reclamation
plan. No slopes created by this operation will be steeper than 2:1.
The proposed reclamation is not for agricultural or horticultural crops.
We do not intend to backfill inert material from outside the permit area.
Material handled on site will not create an unauthorized release of pollutants to the
surface drainage system. A Stormwater Discharge Permit for Gravel Mines will be
obtained from the Colorado Department of Health.
No Pollutants will be dischazged to groundwater on this site.
3.1.6 This is a dry pit. There will be no disturbance to the prevailing hydrologic balance.
There are no wetlands on this site. Topsoil and overburden stockpiles and berms will
be stabilized by broadcasting with a grass seed mix as recommended by the Natural
Resources Conservation Service, Delta Office. Topsoil stockpiles will be monitored
for noxious weed infestations and treated according to the recommendations of the
Delta County Weed Coordinator. A Stormwater Dischazge Permit for Crravel Mines
will be obtained from the Colorado Department of Health
3.1.7 We will not encounter any groundwater on this site.
3.1.8 This site would be expected to provide habitat for mule deer, elk, rabbits and birds. The
proposed site development is not expected to have a major adverse effect on the wildlife
present at or neaz the site. The area of the proposed development is small in relation to
the amount of similaz land that surrounds the site.
3.1.9 Topsoil will be removed and stockpiled ui the process area and on benches of
previously mined azeas and protected from erosion by broadcasting with 281bs/acre of
Tall Wheatgrdss and Tal] Fescue after October 15 as recommended by the NRCS Delta
Office.
Woody vegetation on this site cannot practicably be incorporated into the topsoil.
We do not expect to have to move the topsoil stockpiles until it is used in reclamation.
Topsoil will be roughed in to eliminate slippage zones on grade surfaces. There is
minimal topsoil on the site, but there aze no other materials on site that would support
vegetation. Topsoil will be placed and graded as evenly as possible and compacted
with the placing equipment.
Vegetative piles on this site will be removed or used as brush piles for wildlife habitat.
