It is a practical class ificntion
based on limitations of the soils, the risk of dcns.ge when Lhey arc used, and
the vay they respond to treatment., the soils are classified according to
degree and kind of.per^~nent limitation, but. without consideration of ma,Jor
and generolly expensive landforming Ihst would change the slope, depth, or
other characteristics of the soil:r; and vlttiout consideration of posalble but
unlikely mayor reclamation proSecl:s.
Aoran numerals are used to shoe the (1 broad Capability Classes and letters
follow the class numeral to indiccite the principal problem or hazard. Classes
end sub-classes uoed are as follows:
Class I - Fev or no limitations that restrict choice of crops or require
conservation measures.
Class II - Some limitations that reduce the choice of crops or require
moderate conservation measures.
Class III - Severe limitations that reduce choice of crops or require
special conservation practices or both.
Class IV - Very severe limitations that restrict the choice of crops, require
very careful management, or both..
Class V - lint suited for cultivation but.hsa few or no hazards Then used for
pasture. range, woodland or wildlife.
Clnaa VI - Hot suited for cultivation. Severe limitations. Suited for range,
pasture, woodland or wildlife with careful mnnagc;aent and needed conservation
practices.
Clasp VII - tint suited for cultivation. Very severe limitations. Suited for
range, woodland or,vildlife uses if carefully managed. Usually cannot apply
physical practices such as pitting, furrowing, seeding, etc.
Clans VIII - Pot suited for cultivation, rnnRe, pesture.or woodland. Suited
only fcr recreation, wildlife, water supply or esthetic purposes.
e - F1•osion by wind or eater is the mayor problem.
v - FS:cessive outer. such a~ wetness, overflow, or high voter tsble.
s - tiaJor problem i~ in the soil. It esy be too shallow, too heavy, stony,
low in fertility, salty, alkaline or hsve low moisture capacity.
c.- Climate is the ma,Jor hazard. Crowing season may be very short, there is
a shortage of rainfall or both.
Fbcamples
III c. .- Class III lend where erosion is the mayor hazard.
IVc -Class IV land where the climate is the maJor problem.
