The following elements are determined by atomic absorption techniques using a
• Perkin-Elmer 5000 Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer equipped with autosampling
capability. All light sources are single element hollow cathode Tubes.
Calcium -Determined at a wavelength of 422.7 nm using an air-
acetylene flame. The detection limit is 0.06 mg/I. Calcium is reported in rng/liter.
Mognesium -Determined at a wavelength of 285.2 nrn using an air-
acetylene flame. The detection limit is 0.005 mg/I. Magnesium is reported in mg/liter.
Lead -Determined at a wavelength of 283.3 nrn using a flameless
graphite furnace to effect atomization. The detection limit is 0.005 mg/I. Lead is
reported in mg/liter.
Manganese -Determined ai a wavelength of 279.5 nm using an air-
acetylene flame. The detection limit is 0.04 mg/I. Manganese is reported in mg/liter.
Nickel -Determined at a wavelength of 232.0 nm using an air-acetylene
flame. The detection limit is 0.1 mg/I. Nickel is reported in mg/liter.
Zinc -Determined at a wavelength of 213.9 nrn using an air-acetylene
flame. Detection limit is 0.01 rng/I. Zinc is reported in mg/liter.
Copper -Determined at a wavelength of 324.8 nrn using an air-acetylene flame.
Detection limit is 0.06 rng/I. Copper is reported in rng/liter.
. Chromium (Flexavalent) -The sample is extracted with
methylisobvtyl ketone (MIBK), in which Cr (VI) is soluble. Chromium (VI) is then
determined on the MIBK extract at a wavelength of 357.9 nrn using a nitrous oxide-
acetylene flame. The detection limit is 0.05 mg/I. Chromium (VI) is reported in
mg/liter.
Mercury -The sample is treated with hydroxylamine hydrochloride
followed by stannous chloride to produce elemental mercury, which is swept out of
solution with argon. Mercury is then determined at a wavelength of 253.7 nrn without
o flame. The detection limit is 0.001 rng/I. Mercury is reported in mg/liter.
Sodium -Determined by flame emission photometry ai a wavelength
of 589.0 nm using an air-acetylene flame. The detection limit is 0.01 rng/I. Sodium is
reported in mg/liter.
Potassium -Determined by flame emission photometry at a wavelength
of 766.5 n-n using an air-acetylene flame. The detection limit is 0.005 rng/I. Potassium
is reported in mg/liter.
Iron -Determined at a wavelength of 248.3 nrn using an oir-acetylene
flame. The detection limit is 0.08 mg/I.
