•
METHOD
Several methods were used to determine whether or
not sensitive sites are likely to occur in the buffer zone
of the Seneca II mine. First, a review of the files and
registers of the Office of the State Archaeologist, the
Office of the State Historic Preservation Officer, and the
Bureau of Land Management, Little Snake Resource Area office,
was completed: Second, a review of the archaeological
literature was undertaken. Next a field inspection of
the buffer zone was accomplished.
The review of the federal and state files and registers
was undertaken to locate previously recorded sites within the
buffer zone, and to locate areas within the buffer zone that
had been previously surveyed. If a previously recorded site
was of a type considered sensitive', then it could be shown
that sensitive sites occur in the buffer zone. If sensitive
sites had not been recorded by previous survey, then perhaps
• sites would not occur in the buffer zone.
Review of the archaeological literature was intended
to produce a general picture of the kind of archaeology one
would expect to find in the area, in terms of both culture
history and site type. Should a culture that typically
produces sensitive site types be known for the area or
region, one might suspect that sensitive site types could
be present in the buffer zone. Furthermore, it was hoped
the literature review would indicate topographic situations
in which sensitive sites generally occur. The literature
reviewed consisted of professional periodicals, especially
those that focus on archaeology relevant to Colorado, such
as Southwestern Lore and the Plains Anthropologist;
publications, theses, and dissertations from local universities,
and local cultural resource inventory reports.
Field inspection was initiated in order to inspect
• sites discovered during the literature and records search;
3
to determine if topographic situations considered likely
