AND RELATED ENVIRONMENTAL VALUES
As discussed in Section 2.05.6, Mitigation of Surface Coal Mining
Operation Impacts, Dorchester as the original mine operator, and
subsequently EFCI have requested and obtained information on wildlife
resources and potential impacts in the Southfield permit areas from the
Colorado Division of Wildlife (CDOW). This information is presented in
Exhibit 12, Wildlife Information. Also, a detailed discussion of fish and
wildlife resources is presented in Section 2.04.11, Fish and Wildlife
Resources Information.
None of the wildlife species common to the permit area have been
identified as threatened, endangered, or protected species. Due to the
limited surface area affected, the CDOW has indicated that potential
mining related wildlife impacts will not be significant.
• EFCI has maintained close contact with representatives of the CDOW to
minimize disturbance and potential adverse impacts. Throughout the life
of the mine, EFCI will continue to coordinate with appropriate regulatory
agencies to minimize potential mining related impacts.
As described in the Section 2.05.6, Mitigation of Surface Coal Mining
Operation Impacts, no critical habitat for any threatened or endangered
species was identified within the mine plan or adjacent areas. Similarly,
no threatened, endangered, or protected species were identified as
inhabiting or regularly utilizing the Southfield permit area. EFCI will,
through employee training programs, identify any threatened, endangered,
or protected species which may occur in the permit area and instruct
employees to report any related observations to their supervisors. Any
sightings of threatened, endangered, or protected species or indications
of the existence of any critical habitats will be recorded, documented and
reported to the CMLRD, CDOW, and other appropriate agencies.
. No new electric powerlines or other transmission facilities used in
conjunction with mining activities are planned. In the event that new
facilities become necessary, "raptor proof" power pole structures will be
utilized at both the Southfield mine and loadout areas to minimize the
4.18-1
