It formed in mixed alluvium or outwash. Eleva- <br />tion ranges from 6,000 to 8,000 feet. The average annual precipita- <br />tion is about 14 inches, the average annual air temperature is <br />about 43 dPgrecs p., and th~• frost-frc~~o period is about BO to 105 <br />days. <br />Typically the. upper part of 1. }le surface layer is grayish brown cobbly <br />loam about 4 inches thick.. Tlie lower part is brown cobbly loam about <br />3 inches thick. The underlying material is light brownish gray <br />very cobbly loam that extends to 60 inches or more. <br />Thickness of the surface layer ranges from 5 to 10 inches and <br />texture ranges from loam to sandy loam with 20 to 40 percent cobble <br />and stone fragments. The amount of coarse fragments in the underlying <br />material range from 35 to 80 percent. The soil is typically calcareous <br />throughout but may be leached in the surface few inches. <br />Included with this soil in mapping are small areas of Dahlquist and <br />Spang soils. <br />Permeability of the Grobutte soil is moderate. Effective rooting <br />depth is 60 inches or more.
