PRECIPITATION MONITORING
~•
F
Purpose
~_
1. Gather and correlate data on local precipitation patterns and year-round
~• cyclic behaviors in the immediate vicinity of the Orchard Valley Mine.
Establish a data base and on-going study to ascertain probable recharge ca-
pabilities of wells, establish and correct water runoff probabilities in
direct relationship to the mine properties, and to better control the water
runoff for dams and diversion channel in keeping with Federal Regulations.
3. Required by our Mine Plan via the Office of Surface Mining.
Location and Nature
Raingage at Fan Level
This station is a 12-inch Dual Traverse 192 hours Universlal Raingage from
the Belfort Instrument Company in Baltimore, Maryland. The monitoring device
consists of a clock timer with a 7-8 day graph for recording precipitation. The
graph is changed every seven calendar days, during which time all precipitation
is recorded. It is located approximately one thousand feet north and east of the
mine exhaust fan.
Procedure
1. Lift door and secure in an open position.
2. Remove chart spool.
~~ 3. Remove clip and chart.
4. Replace chart with new one and replace clip.
5. Wind clock by mechanism provided.
6. Replace chart spool.
7. Place a drop of ink from bottle (inside housing unit) on stylus.
8. Place stylus on chart and check to confirm it is printing.
9. Lower door to closed position.
10. Return to office for data interpretation.
Interpretation Procedures (see attachment)
1. Mark off every 24-hour period (every day) on graph.
., 2. Each line on the graph equals .OS inches.
3. Count the change from midnight to midnight of each day. This is the rain-
fall for that day.
4. Record rainfall for each day on chart (see attachment).
Maintenance
1. Mix anti-freeze/oil mixture: 1/2 gal. jug
I qt. anti-freeze
1 pt. oil (20 or 30 wt.)
~• .~ Fill to top with R20
