Major mitigating factors include the following:
1. Effective dust controls will be applied to mining
and processing operations (spray bars on crusher,
conveyors, etc. , watering of unpaved roadways ,
handling of washed gravel while it is wet) .
2. Design of the operation will be such as to minimize
dust emission (minimize exposed areas , phased oper-
ations with reclamation of previously mined
property, so that only a portion of the property
is subject to activity at any one time) .
3. Berm and vegetation (either in place or to be
constructed) will reduce wind effects, screen
• blowing dust, and reduce transport of pollution
beyond site boundaries.
4 . Prevailing winds at the site are from the west
and southwest. Thus , pollutants will generally
be transported away from the City of Boulder and
populated areas. This is particularly true of
very high winds , which are invariably from the
westerly quadrant.
5. Much of the dust generated by gravel mining con-
sists of relatively large particles (greater than
• 30 micrometer diameter) . Most of these large
particles will settle to the ground on-site and
will not be transported to areas more than several
hundred feet from the operations .
G-15
