• Res og nse: As noted in the previous response, Rockcastle, after
reviewing all relevant considerations, proposes to remove and reclaim
the Pond 2 disturbance area. Therefore, no further response is
necessary.
6) As previously discussed, and as contemplated in the Agreement (N, 3), the
roads leading to these pits must be configured to a relatively maintenance
free condition. This will include removal of culverts, to be replaced by
riprapped low water crossings, and/or culvert designs which verify safe
passage of the projected 10-~~ear, 24-hour peak flows. Also, all existing
culverts must be maintained.
Response: The Agreement does not specify requirements for
postmining road drainage structures. However, in order to provide for
effective long-term drainage and maintenance free operation,
• Rockcastle plans to remove all existing culverts and replace them with
riprapped crossings on those roads which branch off the main access
road and provide access to individual pit areas (ie: The Pit 4 access
road, Pits 2/3 access road, Pit 1 access road, main access road
beyond the entrance to Pit 6, and the Pit 5 access road).
Given the limited information on existing culvert installations, full design
review is not feasible. Rockcastle, therefore proposes the following
approach to address all existing culverts on the designated access
roads and provide for effective long-term drainage:
• During final site reclamation/remediation/closure activities,
the field supervisor will travel the designated access roads
and identity all existing culvert installations;
• At each culvert location, the existing culvert will be
. excavated and. removed;
-13-
