. .Kvaerner Meta ~ Project No. 306900
Gene pecification No. GC-18
Geosynthetic Liner
In addition to the manufacturer's quality control report, a comprehensive field quality
control program shall be provided by the Contractor.
6.1 HOPE Test Seams
Test seams shall be provided by the Contractor on fragment pieces of liner to
verify that seaming conditions are favorable. Testing shall be performed at the
beginning of each seaming period, at the Engineer's option and at least once
each four hours, for each piece of seaming apparatus used that day.
A test seam shall be 3 h. long and marked with date, seamer's name, ambient
temperature, and the welding machine number. Specimens of weld, 1/4 in. to 1/2
in. wide, shall be cui from the test seam and tested.
If two out of three above samples fail in either shear or peel, the test shall be
repeated in its entirety. If the samples fail for the second time (two out of three),
the seaming apparatus or seamer shall not be allowed for welding until
deficiencies are corrected and two consecutive test seams are successful. In
general. seams should be stronger than the material.
6.2 HDPE Strength Testing
Coupon sampling of all field seams, including patches and repaired areas, shall
be taken by cutting a coupon approximately 16 in. wide and 24 in. long, with the
seam centered. The frequency and location shall be determined by the Engineer
but shall not be less than one sample per 300 k. of completed field seams.
Coupons shall be properly marked for identification. Heat welded seams shall be
allowed to cool or warm to about 70°F prior to sampling.
The contractor shaft cut five replicate specimens, each one inch wide, from the
coupon and tested on site for seam strength, peel and thickness, in accordance
with the specified matenal tests. To be acceptable, four out of the five replicate
test results must pass the material specification.
The test results shall be provided to the Engineer within two working days
following the cutting of coupons. Additionally, at Engineer's option, selected
coupons may be sent to an independent laboratory for confirmation testing.
6.3 HDPE Continuity Testing
A maximum effort shall be made to install awater-tight liner. This implies that the
seams completed in the field, patches, and extrusions shall be tested for leakage
and recorded. All failures shall be isolated and repaired as directed by the
Engineer and retested. Testing for leakage may be by inter-seam pressure,
vacuum box, or other approved methods.
The Contractor's field engineer shall inspect each seam, marking his initials and
date inspected at the end of each panel.
J l1mPYRl7PENiRUCTY.C10.4iC DOC.
