• • CLIMATE
Relative Humidity
Related to temperature is relative humidity. This, in turn, is related to growth stresses on plants
through vapor pressure deficit. Figure 4 shows the humidity patterns throughout the day in each month
over a year. Humidity is lowest in summer when the temperature is highest, but the average throughout the
year shows little variation. There is a slight tendency, especially at lowest humidities, to parallel the pattern
established in monthly precipitation. Wet summer months tend to be more humid than drier summer
months. Thus, during the growing season, moisture stress would be most severe in June when precipitation
is lowest for the summer, humidity is lowest, and temperature near its peak. July and August would see
some relief from the stress, even though temperatures are higher. Humidity would be higher and therefore
the vapor pressure deficit (actually an evapotranspiration gradient) would be lower. Also, precipitation is
higher. These patterns are reflected in the vege[ation growth patterns in this area as well as
evapotranspiration reduction adaptations exhibited by the various species.
Ave. Mo. Rel.
