• ~ VEGETATION
Miscellaneous Units in Surrounding Land:
Upland Grass/Piuyon/Juniper: This vegetation occurs on the moderately high, upland bluffs
surrounding the site. Although mostly dryland, shortgrass prairie, very favorable sites with proper soils
can support a wide variety of other species characteristic of arid and semi-arid lands.
Upland Riparian (sedge, cattail, rush): Although not associated with this site, a unit of this
vegetation exists across the hills north east of the site. This is in a shallow, very gradual drainage channel
that extends from the north down to the river. Such channels are abundant all along the side slopes of the
Arkansas River valley in this area. Most of these areas are wetlands. This unit might provide some
interesting clues regarding revegetation types for the site.
Old Field: Although upland areas, some land north of the site toward Penrose has been
periodically farmed. Most are now abandoned. The vegetation of these units is mainly composed of weedy
species and should be considered as a seed source for invading weeds that might be problems.
Revegetation in Progress: The northern edge of the Great Blue Heron Pit reclamation program is
immediately south of the western section of this permit. Revegetation programs here should be blended
with the revegetation of the lands included in this permit. This revegetation site, which is being intensively
monitored, will provide many clues as to how to reclaim this site. In particular, the Great Blue Heron Site
provides a good deal of information on what invades lake shores in this area, what can be successfully
grown in more upland areas, the kinds of problems associated with the revegetation, especially weeds, and
what the ideal relationship is between groundwater support and vegetation growth to produce a good
growth wi[h minimal effort. Much can be learned from that site and directly applied to this site. It is not
often that such a site occurs adjacent to a new project and which is so similar in characteris[ics.
Grisenti Farms Gravel Pit Original Application Exhibit J Page J-5
