• • RECLAMATION PLAN
topsoil and overburden are only barely distinguishable. That is not the case here. The long history
of agricultural use for pasture and crop has created a highly differentiated soil on top of the native
sandy to silty material that forms the overburden. Topsoil will be salvaged separately.
Topsoiling will occur to a minimum depth of 6 inches (probably more), although that is
only the depth of the final, top layer. Actually, the depth will be greater than that because under
the topsoil will be many feet of overburden and wash fines that were placed in the backfilling
process.
Topsoil Protection - The Mining Plan (Exhibit E) discussed the topsoil locations and shape.
Immediately after the establishment of the topsoil locations they should be seeded to produce a
protective growth. The following mixture will be used for that protection. This mixture contains
those species of the final revegetation mixes that would be appropriate for use on a topsoil stockpile
where conditions will tend to be drier and hotter than the final revegetation surface after
redistribution of the soil.
Topsoi] Protection Seed Mix
Species pounds/acre PLS
(broadcast) seeds per
square foot
Cresced Wheatgrass -Fairway 5 34.66
Intermediate Wheatgrass 8 17.81
Canada Wildrye 3 7.3
Ranger Alfalfa 4 19.28
Sand Dropseed 0.25 29.8
TOTAL = 20.25 108.85
Revegetation
Revegetation of the site will involve primarily two locations. First, all upland areas will be
revegetated to a dryland pasture utilizing a blend of native and introduced species. The primary mix
to be planted is shown in a separate table included later in this section of this exhibit. Because
locally saline soils can be a problem in this area, testing of the soils may be necessary. It has been
found elsewhere that where saline conditions exist, utilizing salt tolerant species is almost
Grisenti Farms Gravel Pit Original Application Exhibit E Page E-5
