• footings and diverting runoff away from buildings help to prevent structural
damage because of shrinking and swelling. Septic tank absorption fields do
not function properly because of very slow permeability. Use of sandy back-
fill for the trench and long absorption lines helps to compensate for the very
slow permeability. Effluent from septic tank absorption fields can surface in
downslope areas and thus create a hazard to health. They farmed in residuum weathered from
shale. Elevation is 6,300 to 7,000 feet. The average annual precipitation is
about 15 to 17 inches, the average annual air temperature is about 41 to
43 degrees F, and the frost-free season is 75 to 95 days.
• This unit is 55 percent Abor soil and 35 percent Moyerson soil. Included
in this unit are small areas of Bulkley silty clay loam, and small areas with-
stones on the surface.
The Abor soil is moderately deep and well drained. It formed in residuum
derived from shale. Typically, the surface layer is brown silty clay loam
about 10 inches thick. The subsoil is pale brown silty clay loam about
10 inches thick. The substratum is pale brown silty clay about 8 inches
thick. Partially weathered shale is at a depth of 28 inches.
Permeability of the Abor soil is very slow. Available water capacity is
low. Effective rooting depth is 20 to 40 inches. Runoff is rapid, and the
hazard of water erosion is high.
The Moyerson soil is shallow and well drained. It formed in residuum
derived from shale. Typically, the surface layer is light brownish gray silty
clay loam about 2 inches thick. The upper part of the underlying material is
• light brownish gray silty clay loam about 3 inches thick. The lower part of
Ex. 16-22
