• The potential plant community on this unit is mainly western wheatgrass,
prairie junegrass, Nevada bluegrass, and alkali sagebrush. Other plants that
characterize this unit are onion, bottlebrush squirreltail, and Vasey rabbit-
brush. The average annual production of air-dry vegetation is about
500 pounds.
If the range is overgrazed, the proportion of preferred forage plants
decreases and the proportion of less preferred forage plants increases.
Therefore, livestock grazing should be managed so that the desired balance of
preferred species is maintained in the plant community.
If the range vegetation is seriously deteriorated, seeding is needed.
The plants selected for seeding should meet the seasonal requirements of
livestock or wildlife, or both. Seeding late in fall helps to ensure that
soil moisture will be adequate for the establishment of the seedlings next
spring. The main limitation for seeding is steepness of slope.
• Other management practices suitable for use on this unit are proper range
use, deferred grazing, rotation grazing, and brush management. Brush manage-
ment improves deteriorated areas of range that are producing more woody shrubs
than were present in the potential plant community.
If this unit is used for homesite development, the main limitations are
shrink-swell potential, very slow permeability, and slope. If buildings are
constructed on the soil in this unit, properly designing foundtions and foot-
ings and diverting runoff away from buildings help to prevent structural
damage because of shrinking and swelling. Septic tank absorption fields do
not function properly because of very slow permeability. Use of sandy back-
fill for the trench and long asorption lines helps to compensate for the very
slow permeability. This soil is subject to slippage if it becomes saturated.
This map unit is in capability subclass VIe. It is in Claypan range
site.
• F10--Binco silty clay loam, 25 to 40 percent slopes. This deep, well
drained soil is on ridges and mountainsides.
