. •
The existing pond on the west edge of the project area is
an interesting habitat, especially since there are few ponds
nearby, but it has no outstanding or unique features. It
does attract some birds (waterfowl , herons , shorebirds, song- -
birds) and some semi-aquatic mammals (muskrat, raccoon) .
The dominant fish species are bluegill and largemouth bass ,
with green sunfish, black crappie and flathead minnows also
present; these populations, however, are presently of little
value to sport fishing (Flickinger 1973) .
Other ponds exist farther west, at the west edge of the
adjoining Flatiron pit. Activity at that pit has not
adversely affected wildlife (see Figure D-1) and activity
• at the proposed Deepe Farm pit would be farther from these
ponds.
Endangered Species
No state or nationally endangered species is known to occur
in the project area. There is little reason to believe the
habitats present in the area and in the vicinity are particu-
larly attractive to any endangered migratory species , although
it is possible that migrating peregrine falcons (Falco
peregrinus anatum, or F.P. tundrius) could occur here. To
• what extent these or other endangered species might have
occurred in this area in the past is unknown.
D-3
