TAB 1 &
BACKFILLING AND GRADING
Introduction
The loadout area was originally disturbed by construction activities during [he time
period 1978 - 1979. The majority of the earthmoving operations were conducted as a direct
result of the grade requirements for the railroad spur. The topography of the land prior
to construction was such that construction of the spur required much mare cu[ than it did
fill. The following discussion regarding backf illing and gr din9 is limited [o those
areas disturbed due to constrvction and will be graded only when the loadout is no longer
needed.
Timing of Backfilling and Grading
The loadout area and railroad spur will be graded in conjunction with closure or final
reclamation of the facility. This date has not yet been determined Isee Tab 17,
• Reclamation Schedule).
Method for Backf illing and Grading
To the extent possible, most oradin9 will be conducted by dozing material into [he cut
areas. This will leave a Swale that has positive drainage Isee Exhibit 18-1). This is
not inconsistent with the post mine land use of pasture land. Leaving an undulating
topography will also be of benefit to wildlife as escape and thermal cover. Please refer
to Exhibit ]8-2 for pre- and post-opera [i onal cross sections.
Disturbance beyond the existing disturbance boundary to backfill or slope certain areas to
an acceptable grade may be necessary. Pri oz to this operation, if topsoil exists in [his
area, it will be salvaged prior to disturbance. Depending on the location, the topsoil
may be pushed back out of the way or picked up and stockpiled or redistributed.
After the buildings and coal conveyance eouipment has been removed, the area will be
graded to blend into [he surrounding topography (Exhibit 18-1).
• please refer to Tab 23, Bonding, for specifics pertaining to demolition, disposal,
1 Revised 03!01 /93
