at all possible, topsoil will be directly redistributed over
• graded and prepared areas. Tao important reclamation goals are
realized when this occurs, they are: 1) minimizati~ of topsoil
- - loss, and 2) toppoil serves as a seed and root stock source.
The other method for redistributing topsoil is to re-
trieve the material frcm the stockpile and then redistribute it
over the prepared. Otis process is not as efficient as the one
above, as this method inwlves the double handling of the material
and the decrease potential of the material as a seed and root
stoc-.k source.
Fbr either method the redistribution process is the
same, that being topsoil loaded into haul trucks for transport
to the prepared area, placing the topsoil in the area, and using
dozers or a motor grader to spread the topsoil. The topsoil
• redistribution schedule is presented in Table V-3.
5.3.2.8 Reclamation Activities
The reclamation activities actually start with topsoil
salvage. The rPma;n;nq activities inwlve soil analysis, seeding
and mulching. Prior to seeding, the redistributed topsoil will be
analyzed for concentrations of nutrients (N, P, K at a minimiun),
and if the analysis indicates marginal or unsatisfactory con-
centrations, fertilizer will be applied and incorporated into the
topsoil.
The seeding and mulching will occur in the fall or early
spring. The specifics of this segment of the reclamation
• activities will be thoroughly developed in the reclamation plan.
V-17
