is covered with woody vegetation a prel~m;nary step will be
. required before topsoil salvage can begin. 'This step inwlves
the removal of the pinyon-jurLiper and oak brush which oce-urs
on the hillsides. Zhis task is accru~~lished by driving the dozer
downslope with the blade elevated 12 inches or more off of the ground.
'This action ]mocks the trees and large shrubs over and then another
pass is made downslope with the blade elevated. 'This final pass
results in the trees and shrubs being windrowed at the low wall
boundary of the pit. From this point they are placed in the
haul trucks for transport to the pit for burial. 7.he woody
vegetation will be placed at the bottom or towards the bottom
of the pit. In no case will thew be less than 10 feet of fill
over the woody material.
• 5.3.2.5 Zbpsoil Salvage
After the woody vegetation has been ramved from the
area to be disturbed, the next step is the recroval of the topsoil.
'This oo~onent of the operation establishes the basis upon which
the reclamation work is built. 'ihe topsoil is pushed damslope to
a central point where the material is loaded into haul trucks. 'The
topsoil is hauled and placed in either an approved topsoil stockpile
or it is placed on a regraded area and distributed over the area.
An important aspect of the topsoil recroval process is
that a buffer zone is left between a disturbed and an undisturbed
area. By salvaging topsoil in this buffer zone it will ensure that
topsoil is not lost due to sloughing of highwalls. Also, it
. provides for additional operational room and tends to decrease
V-10
