sistent with the econanic cutoff lines. In order to do this, the
highwall line is surveyed and marked to ensure that the equipment
operators do not exceed the economic stripping limits. In areas
where there is potential for the stakes to be destroyed by the
operators then offset stakes are used.
5.3.2.2 Construction of ~1~+++P^t Control System
Prior to surface disturbance the sediment control system
for the area is constructed. This can include the construction
of diversion ditches, collection ditches, sediment ponds and
culvert placement.
The diversion ditches are located upslope of the disturbed
area and are used to convey runoff away from the disturbed area.
These ditches aze usually located on steep hillsides and therefore
it is not practical to salvage topsoil prior to the construction
of the ditches. In the event the ditch traverses an area which
is not steep, topsoil will be bladed downslope and stabilized
and then the ditch will be cut into the hillside.
Collection ditches will be located downslope of the disturbed
area and will be used to collect runoff from the disturbed area
and direct it to the sediment pond. In view of the fact that
these ditches will be near the disturbed area, topsoil will be
salvaged and later used in the reclamation of the ditches.
The construction of new sediment ponds will occur in
the following ma^^or: emUanlamnt and pool boundaries located;
woody vegetation, if p*-P~^t, grubbed; topsoil relmved from embarilvrn~t
and pool area; embankment created using fill frtan pool area if
possible, otherwise fill will be hauled in from the developing pit;
V-8
