• 5.0 NOXIOUS WEEDS
i~
A list of noxious weeds for Delta County was developed by the Colorado Division of Minerals and
Geology in 1998. Of the 21 noxious weed species listed, 11 were encountered within the vegetation
study area. These taxa, the plant communities where they were observed, and their relative distribution
are provided in the following table.

Sdenflrk Name Common Name HlpaNt~
/
Derelkt Bowie Wllltams
Feature Irrlyafnd

Wetland Orofgrd UtcFratd N
Reid
Arctium minus Burdock UC R VC VC l.C R
Cardarra latitolia (drabs) Whitetop C UC l~ l~
Carduus nutans Musk Thistl R R R
Centaurea (Acroptilon) repens Russian Knapweed l1C VR
Cirsium (Braes) arvense Canada Thistl R C R R C
Convdwlus arvensis Bindweed R UB UB UB UB UB
Cynoglossum otircrnale Houndstongue VC C R R R UC
Leucanthemum wlgare Oxeye Dais VR
Linaria wl aris Yellow Toadflax VR
Onopordum acanthium Scotch Thisll UC R R VR
Tamarix ramosissima Salt Ced VR
U B =Ubiquitous -always within view UC =Uncommon -occasionally observed within area
V C =Very Common -uniform distribution within area R =Rare - 3 to 10 observations
C =Common -scattered distribution within area V R = Ver Rare -one or two observations
Perusal of the above table indicates an extensive presence of noxious weeds within the vegetation
study area. It would be rewmmended that following project construction and during operations, an
aggressive weed control program be initiated to ensure these species are reduced in numbers and extent
or possibly eradicated from the reasonable proximity of the proposed project area. According to the
Division of Minerals and Geology; bindweed, oxeye daisy, and salt cedar require secondary control
measures while the remaining species require mandatory control measures. Furthermore, enforcement
of weed control may be taken by the state at the operators expense if a noxious weed infestation is found
during the permit period. An infestation is defined two ways. First, relative cover or composition of one
noxious weed or a combination of noxious weeds is greater than 3°k in a revegetated stand. Or second,
a patch of any listed species in which the noxious weed component exceeds 25% of the relative cover
and occupies an area larger than 100 ttz on any disturbed area. These criteria are often exceeded in the
baseline condition. This indicates that a noxious weed control program during operations and reclamation
• phases should be implemented.
~QaDd14 ~~~ ~4Bt7, tNC.
