• EXHIBIT 38
GEOPHYSICAL SOIL MOISTURE MEASUREMENT STUDY
A geophysical soil moisture measurement study has been conducted in
accordance with Section 785.19 of this application. Data have been
collected to document soil moisture conditions which exist within the
"unconsolidated stream-laid deposits holding streams" shown on !4ap 5,
North Park Hydrology, and Map 15, Kerr Mine Area Ground Slater Hydrology.
Specifically, the data were collected to document, if possible, the
presence of capillary water extending from the water table upward into
the root zone.
This study was conducted in late summer, during the week of
September 15, 1980, at a time of year when the water table and capillary
_ fringe should be at their lowest levels. Thus, if capillary water was
found within the root zone at the time of measurement, the root zone
could be determined to have a perennial water supply. These findings
would indicate the presence of a subirrigated alluvial valley floor.
The soil moisture data were collected using neutron probe access
tubes and a nuclear soil moisture gauge. The procedure consisted of
drilling a two-inch auger hole through the A and B soil horizons and the
alluvium to the water table; setting a two-inch diameter alluminum
irrigation pipe in the hole, allowing the access tube to settle for at
lease 24 hours; and logging the access tube from the bottom up at six-
inch intervals with a nuclear soil moisture gauge. A lithologic des-
cription of each auger hole was obtained during drilling.
The neutron probe access tubes are located at the five environ-
mental monitoring station sites
plus three additional sites in
shown on Map 5, North Park Hydrology,
the intermittent draws draining the
• proposed permit area. The environmental monitoring stations are: 1)
