•
-ll- Revised pCT 3 p 198)
species (i.e., species imst canronly encountered along shrub transects and in
roves quadrats) and/or life form for each sample site ce standard data forms.
SHRUB DENSITY
Density of shrubs in the upland sagebrush vegetation type was detenninsi using
a belt transect method. All shrubs within a strip 45 x 5 m were counted by
species aid number per hectare detevnined. 1te<ity transacts were surveyed in
the upland c.,~m/.n+ch affected ama a[d 15 on t}e upland Sagebrush control site.
T4ZE£ DH7.SITY AND BASAL~ARFA INTA
Since tree ablmumities on the site were small and contained few trees, a
cas~lete Can i'nS technique w0s 1LSed t0 CO1leCt density and basal area data
(basal area is the arm of a plane passed through the start of a tree at
right angles to its longitudinal axis at breast height). This entailed
counting all trees wlthln the mimtmity a~ recording cizciuoference at
breast height (cbh) in caitimeters for each. Since the areal extent of
each mnmmity could be obtained by polar planimetry techniques, number
of trees per unit area (i.e., trees/acre) was easily obtained. Likewise,
basal area was directly convertible fran cbh measurements.
VD~i7iTIQ4 SPDCIFS QY4PQSITICYV
Reconnaissance type surveys were cmducterl within each vegetation type on
all affected and control areas to obtain a complete listing of vegetation
species for the study area. Surveys were conducted by a plant taxonanist
durixg a minimum of two days each ironth thTwghout the growing season
(early May through Auqust). A plant voucher collection was prepared for
all planC species identified during this study and has been suLnitte3 to
the Nucla Mine m be maintained on pe+*u*+a++t file. As additional species
are verified, C-ki?~ will be added to the on-site plant collection. For
each plant collec"keily LiAE°, habitat, elevation aryl associated species were
recorded. 4uestionable plants were positively identified at the Rocky Mountain
Herbarium in Laramie, Wyoming or at the U.S. Forest Service Herbarium in
Ft. Collins, Colorado. Tamr~rnuc references ooctsulted for plant identifica-
tion puzposes includai Hitchcock, et al. (1959), Hitchcock and Cnase (1971),
Harrington (1954) and Dom (1977).
(Revised March 2006) Attachment 2.05.6(2)-1-16
