-1o-
described previously for cover quadrats. The number of production exclo-
sures established in each vegetation type and control area was determined
by techniques described under "Data Collection" above. Table 1 shows the
number of production exclosures placed in each vegetation type and con-
trol area.
Exclosures were left in place throughout the 1979 growing season. All
exclosuren were sailed on both affected and control areas during the
period August 27 through Septentier 7, 1979.. All production Bangles were
mlleck~ lam enough in the day to ensure that the vegetation surface was
dry. This precaution ensured tkie accuracy of wet-weight deternunations.
Production plots were sampled using a ]mZ welded alumirnan frame quadrat
centered within each exclosure. All present-year vegetation growth fal-
ling within the lmZ quadrat was clipped using p*+~^;*+g shears (shrubs)
and grass scissors (forts and grassesj. All shrubs were clipped near
ground level m ensure acairate separation of the present year's growth
• in the Lsboramry prior to drying and Weighing. Experience has sham
that new growth can be separated accurately only in the~laboramry where
envirumrental facmrs such as wind can be controlled. The current year's
growth clipped from each protected quadrat was bagged according to major
species or life form and properly labeled. Wet weights ware recorded bi'
vegetative species and by life form for all species except shrubs usucg
spring scales at ttie tiYne ~of clipping.
"Iaboramxy Technig,Y'e. The cim:art year's growth was separated fran all
shrub, sub-shn~b and cushion pant species in the laboramry. Shn$ sam-
ples wine dried at ambient air teccgerature for approximately 30 days prior
m separation of new growth. This process greatly facilitated the separa-
tion procedure and ensured a oonplete sailing o£ all leaves since these
would generally drop off the plant when dried. New twig growth rmiairxad
easily dist;,~+g,~; h>'l.e fzcan old growth (by its lighter color} after 30
days of air drying. Thus, accurate separation of both leaf and twig
material was facilitated by this pre-drying teChn~rn,n. ALl sa~cgles wire
dried for 24 hours in a gravity drying oven at a constant tengerature of
lOSoC. All 5angles dried in this manner wore weighed m the nearest
0.1 cyn (as specified in Y,}+aning DEQ Guideline #2, March,~19791 on an Ohaus
triple beam balance. Production data were reoozded according to major
• (Revised March 2006) Attachment 2.05.6(2}1-15
