r N,B--latent-Brownsto complex (cont.)
very high.
•
Nost of the acreage of this unit is used as rangeland and irrigated
hayland.
The potential native vegetation on Patent soils is mainly western wheat-
grass, blue grama, prairie junegrass and needle-and-thread. If the conditicn
of the range deteriorates, blue grama, rabbitbrush, broom snakeweed, gray
horsebrush and prairie junegrass increase. Renovating and using deferred
and_rotatian grazing,. along with cross fencing and livestock water develop-
ments, help -to prevent range deterioration'and to .promote the production of
the more desireable plarits. Suitable grasses Sor.seeding are intermediate
C wheatgrass, pubescent wheatgrass, western wheatgrass and mountain brome.
• Seed should be drilled into a well prepared, firm, weed-free seedbed.
The potential native vegetation on Brownsto soils is a sparse stand
oS pinyon and juniper with an understory of Indian ricegrass, blue grama,
and needle-and-thread. ?:any areas of pinyon-juniper are several acres or
less in size.
On larger areas pin_~on and juniper products such as firewood, pinyon nLts,
fence posts and Christmas trees can be harvested. Removal of the overstory
generally enhances reproduction and promotes the growth of grass and small
trees. Care must be taken to protect the soils on steep slopes from erosion.
Harvested areas should be deferred from grazing Sor at least 2 years to assue
~ development of a good soil-protecting plant community.
1
