VII. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR TOPSOIL SPREADING & SEEDING:
A. Topsoil Placement:
To{coil stripped from the contruction site and stored in the designated topsoil
storage area will be used during reclamation oP all disturbed land surfaces.
Procedures for topsoil stripping and stockpiling shall be as directed by Atlantic
Rit:hfield's Environmental Coordinator and shall be in e:onformity with the M&R
plan as necessary to protect and preserve the topsoil On all surfaces requiring
topsoil and seeding, the stored topsoil shall be spread to fln even depth of 12-18
inches, using equipment suitable for topsoil replacement. Those areas with backfill
compacted to 85916 of maximum density shall 5e scarified to a depth of at least 12
inches before topsoil is spread. This will provide a contact with the subsoil
material, reduce slippage of topsoil on steeper slopes, anti promote root penetration
below the topsoil Other areas requiring topsoil should be fairly rough before the
application of the topsoil
B. Seedbed Preparation:
A seedbed favorable to seedling establishment shall be prepared prior to seeding,
whether seeding is to be accomplished through broadcast methods or with a drill
Seedbed preparation on 3:1 or lesser slopes shall consist of discing or harrowing the
replaced topsoil so that a firm, finable (not cloddy) bed is available for seeding. On
slopes greater than 3:1, the topsoil shall be dragged or hand-raked as appropriate.
All dieting, harrowing and drill seeding shall be accomplished parallel to slopes on
steep topography and at right angles to the prevailing winds on relatively flat
areas. This will greatly reduce erosion problems before vegetation is established.
.4 C. Planting:
When a drill is used for seeding, seeding depth shall be regulated to approximately
1/2 inch deep, depending on the seed being used. If broadcast seeding is used, the
recommended rates shall be doubled, and the area lightly dragged or harrowed
following seed application to cover the seeds. In small. areas or on steep slopes
where dragging or harrowing cannot be accomplished, the seeds shall be covered by
alight hand raking.
Planting shall be accomplished in late fall or early spring. Late fall is usually
preferred because inclement weather is less likely to affect revegetation
operations and fall planting allows the seed to over-winter in the ground. If seeds
are allowed to over-winter in the ground, germination the following spring is
improved in many species.
D. Soil Amendments:
Fertilizer and mulch shall be used, as necessary, to stimulate plant growth and thus
impede erosion. Fertilizer shall be applied at rates indicated by soil analyses prior
to planting.
Mulch shall be used to impede erosion and produce an environment conducive to
seedling establishment. Straw, native hay, wood chips, or hydromulch shall be used
in most areas, although more costly mulches such as }ute netting may be required •
on steep slopes.
14
