shrub and pinyon-~unlper types during the baseline
- be used in determining success of revegetation. A
~~~ dard will be determined based on the relative area
the disturbed area prior to mining. WSth the help
Service, Perna Resources Corporation has Sdentifie
vegetation studies will
weighted success stan-
oceupied by each type in
of the Soil Conservation
i a dryland pasture near
the mine area to serve as a proposed reference area for the post-mining '
dryland pasture community. Perna Resources Corporation sill negotiate with
the landowner for permission to use the dryland pasture as a reference
area. Just prior to revegetation success studies for bond release, this
proposed reference area will be examined by Perna Resources Corporation and
the Colorado Hined Land Reclamation Division to verify that the reference
area is representative of a dry lend pasture type at that time. If this
proposed reference area Ls deemed aot representative of the dryland pasture
aC the time revegetation success studies will be conducted or If it is
unsuited for ocher reasons (i.e., land owner withholds permission to use
1t), success standards for the dryland pasture will be based on an alter-
native approach. The alternative standards will be based on estimates of
the average cover, productivity, woody plant density, and species diver-
sity as predicted by the Soil Conservation Service for a dryland pasture on
the site and the average values of the parameters for the mountain shrub
and pinyon-juniper reference areas, weighted as appropriate to reflect the
relative area occupied by each type in the reclaimed sites. If the alter-
native is required, the enact approach and standards will be developed and
submitted [o the Colorado Hined Land Reclamation Division for approval
prior to initiating the revegetation success studies.
riechods co obtain the cover, productivity, moody plant density, end
species diversity ~fata on the reclaimed area and reference areas will be
[he same as those used to obtain the baseline data (see methods section of
vegetation data reports}. Cover data will be obtained with the point
Intercept mLthod (Hueller-Dombois and Ellenberg 1974) with 100 points per
50 meter transect. Productivity data will be obtained by clipping the
current years' herbaceous growth from lm2 plots, drying the plant material
at 105'C for 24 hours, and weighing the samples to the nearest O.lgm. The
plot size for productivity sampling vas determined based on an average of
•
38-35
