RE: Adequacy Review -•hmann Sand and Gravel Mine, M-20•-017 Faye 2
The small prairie dog town which is within the mining limits is presently limited to the low berms
surrounding the ditch, and therefore is within the already described 25-foot setback area. As
mentioned earlier, the option of relocation is unfortunately not available. Due to their location, the
prairie dogs will not be disturbed by the mining operations. However, if it becomes necessary, we
will employ approved methods of euthanasia for removal.
A wildlife and wetland survey completed by Savage and Savage in January 2001 concluded that
there is no burrowing owl habitat on either the Lohmann or the French properties. This survey was
included with the application materials. Neighboring properties host prairie dog towns, so if the
small prairie dog town mentioned earlier must be removed, any bald eagles or ferruginous hawks
which travel through this area would still have a readily available food source. Therefore, we feel
that no new surveys are necessary.
We contacted the Colorado Natural Heritage Program (CNHP) and requested information on any
occurrences of threatened or endangered plants or animals at this site. The CNHP concluded in
their letter dated Januay 17 that "no dccumented ray e or imperiled occurrences of plants or
animals, including Threatened and Endangered species, have been located in the area of interest."
Their response letter was also included in the application materials.
We believe that we have adequately addressed all of the concerns of the Colorado Division of
Wildlife through all of our previous efforts. If you have any questions, or require additional
information, please call me at 303-287-4656, extension 18.
Sincerely,
.C_/r ' '
Lynn E. yer
Regulat Manager
cc: Carl Mount, Division of Minerals and Geology
Mike Sherman, Division of Wildlife
Mike Babler, Division of Wildlife
R.A.
