1NTRODUCTIOH
• Sediment Pond 006 was constructed in the NN'4 NN'4 of Section 22, Township 5 North, Range 88
Nest in a tributary to Hubberson Culch. The pond end embankment was constructed to
control runoff end sediment from a watershed disturbed by mining activities. Phase 1
construction was completed in 1989. Phase II consisted of modifying the existing
principal spillway to increase the active storage capacity of the pond and Lowering the '
emergency spillway. A drop inlet CMP was installed to control and treat the runoff from
the watershed. Phase III will consist of constructing another small temporary
sedimentation structure upstream from Pond 006 (see Exhibit 13-2). This structure will
enable Pond 006 to treat the Life of Mine disturbance area runoff within the watershed.
Phase 111 will not be needed until the second 5 year permit term when coal removal
activities commence on the south side of the main drainage channel (006 Gulch). Peabody
will submit to CMLRD and construct the approved sedimentation structure in series with
Pond 006 before the maximum disturbance area exceeds 363 acres within the watershed, this
future pond is located in an area to be mined by 1993. Therefore, no formal design plans
can be submitted to CMLRD until the area is completely mined out and rough graded.
SITE DESCRIPTION
• Land Use. Sediment Pond 006 is in a watershed that is tributary to Hubberson Gulch. This
watershed will be disturbed by mining activities as shown on Exhibit 28-1 and
contemporaneously reclaimed es shown on Exhibit 19-1. Design for Phase II was based on
the maximum proposed disturbance of approximately 363 acres within the proposed mining
area. This proposed disturbance area will allow for mining activities to continue during
the current 5 year permit term.
CONSTRUCTION (Brief)
Embankment. The existing embankment is a homogeneous earth fill structure. The top width
of the existing embankment is 30 feet end upstream and downstream slopes of approximately
3h:1v each. The principal spillway consists of a 24" diameter drop inlet CM P, the
separate emergency spillway consists of a trapezoidal channel. Please refer to Exhibit
13-6.
Excavation (Pond Area). A small portion of the pond capacity is a result of excavating
below natural ground level. Excavated suitable material was used in embankment
construction. Excess materiel was wasted. The pond side slopes ere 2h:1v or flatter. In
• Phase 11, no further excavation of the ponding area was necessary.
1
